The Alpha Sigma Centennial Celebrate

9/1/25, 10:00 PM

Smith + Partners | Urban Research launches with the Alpha Sigma Centennial Project, preserving 100 years of history and impact from the distinguished Alpha Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., at Wiley University in Marshall, TX.

Founded on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was the first Black intercollegiate fraternity. The Alpha Sigma chapter was founded on Monday, April 4, 1925, and was the first Alpha Phi Alpha chapter in Texas. Its establishment marked the beginning of what would become the Texas Council of Alpha Chapters (TCAC), which has grown to become one of the largest and most influential councils in the global fraternity.

Our firm has been entrusted with the vital task of compiling and preserving the Alpha Sigma chapter’s century-long history—unearthing forgotten stories and honoring the rich legacy of its distinguished members. This project is more than an archival endeavor; it is a celebration of the chapter’s monumental contributions to scholarship, leadership, and community impact over the past century.

Guided by Joshua T. Smith and supported by Lorenzo Septs, initiates of the chapter, and our dedicated research team, we are committed to delivering a comprehensive historical record by October 2025. Already, we’ve uncovered invaluable materials that shed light on the chapter’s enduring influence on both Wiley University and the Marshall, Texas community, as well as its broader contributions to the nation.

For 100 years, Alpha Sigma has not only shaped the future of Wiley University and Marshall but has also made indelible marks on the fabric of this country. Its members have gone on to become prominent civil rights activists, lawyers, judges, doctors, businessmen, educators, clergy, and leaders in virtually every human endeavor. True to the fraternity's motto—"First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All"—Alpha Sigma has exemplified its core values of manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind.

As we steward this legacy, we are proud to be part of ensuring that the Alpha Sigma chapter’s centennial celebration is commemorated with the depth, care, and excellence it so richly deserves. This project represents a milestone for our firm and for the chapter’s enduring history, and we are excited to play a role in honoring the past while inspiring the next 100 years of excellence.
